From script to RolePlay

Adapting Your Scripts for AI

Updated 43 days ago

You’ve got a great script, but how do you turn it into a dynamic Apprendly RolePlay? The key is adapting your existing content to a format that our platform understands. This guide will show you how to structure your script to create an immersive and effective roleplay scenario.

Adapting your existing script

Here’s how to convert your existing script or training content into a format that works perfectly with Apprendly RolePlay. The more specific you are, the better the outcome will be.

1. Define the Scenario: Look at the main plot of your script and define the core problem or challenge. What is the central conflict the player needs to address? This will become your description of the Scenario.

2. Break Down the Roles: Identify the key players in your script.

  • The Player’s Role: Define the user’s title, responsibility, and objective. Keep this brief to allow the user creative freedom.
  • The AI Actor’s Role: Who is the other character? What is their name, personality, and motivation?
  • The AI Actor’s Backstory: What happened before this scene? What information does the AI character have that the user doesn’t?

3. Set Clear Goals: Look at your source material for every distinct thing the user should accomplish, not just one headline objective. If your script or briefing states five things the user needs to do, define five goals, if it states twelve, define twelve. Give each one a short name, a one-sentence description, and a priority (High, Medium, or Low). These are three separate fields in the Learning Goals section of the RolePlay creation page, so keep every goal clearly separated rather than bundling several into one entry. This helps the AI Actor stay on track during the RolePlay, and it’s how the platform actually scores whether the user reached each objective. Only fall back to a single primary goal with a couple of supporting goals when your source material doesn’t spell out a specific list.

4. Use Specific Instructions: This is how you fine-tune the AI’s behavior. Go through your script and identify any specific actions or phrases you want the AI Actor to use. For example, instruct the AI Actor to start the conversation with a specific phrase, or define a reaction if the user says something like, “I want to speak to the manager.”

5. Specify the Language: Name the single language the roleplay should be in (e.g. “Dutch,” “French”). The AI Actor performs in one language at a time, so avoid a range or a market description like “Dutch/French”. If your script needs to reach more than one language, create a separate roleplay per language instead.

6. Estimate the Length: Apprendly counts a “response” as one message from the user, the AI Actor’s opening line is free and doesn’t count. Look at the goals you defined in step 3 and group them into the natural phases of your script (opening, core discussion, closing, or whatever structure your script already has). Estimate at least one user response per phase, more for phases that involve real back-and-forth (drawing the AI Actor out, working through resistance) than for a single clean statement. State it as a short range, e.g. “8-10 responses,” so the roleplay isn’t set up to run out of room before the user can reach every goal.

The RolePlay script template

Use this template to format your existing scripts. Simply fill in the details to create your scenario.

Scenario

[Describe the situation. What is the core challenge or problem the player needs to address?]

  • Language: [The single language this roleplay should run in, e.g. “Dutch,” “French.” Never a range.]

Roles

Player’s Role: [Describe the player’s role, e.g., title, responsibilities, and knowledge level.]

  • Player’s Approach: [Provide a brief description of how the player should act. What is their approach to the situation?]
  • Goals: [List every goal the player needs to reach, one block per goal, matching however many distinct objectives your source material states. This maps directly to the Learning Goals form, which takes a Goal name, Goal description, and Priority as three separate fields per goal.]
    • Goal: [Short name, 2-4 words]
      • Description: [One sentence describing what the player should do]
      • Priority: [High / Medium / Low]
    • Goal: [Short name]
      • Description: [One sentence]
      • Priority: [High / Medium / Low]
    • (repeat one block per goal)
  • Expected Length: [A short range, e.g. “8-10 responses,” estimating how many user responses it takes to reach every goal above.]

AI Character’s Role: [Give the AI character a name and a title.]

  • Backstory: [Give the AI character a history, interests, motivations, or any potential biases.]
  • Personality: [Describe the AI character’s temperament, personality, and communication style. Are they angry, accommodating, impatient, etc.?]
  • Key Information: [Provide specific background information that the AI character possesses.]
  • AI Character’s Goals: [What is the AI character’s main objective in the roleplay?]

Specific Instructions for the AI Character

[These are the concrete instructions that guide the AI character’s behavior. Use “trigger words” or specific phrases to define a response.]

  • General Behavior: [Describe the general behavior of the AI character. For example, “The AI character will not initiate small talk on their own.”]
  • Responses to Actions: [Define how the AI character should react to certain actions from the player.]
    • If the player does X: [Specify the AI character’s reaction.]
    • If the player says “[specific word/phrase]”: The AI character will respond with “[specific response]”.
    • If the player is [emotion/behavior]: [Describe how the AI character should react.]

Example Interactions

Conversation Starter: [Provide an example of how the AI character should begin the conversation to set the tone and direction. For example, “Hi, nice to talk to you.”]

With these best practices, you can turn any script into a challenging and highly effective roleplay experience that delivers real results.
