Adding Apprendly RolePlays to Workday Learning

Add Apprendly RolePlays to Workday Learning with a SCORM package for tracked completion, or a link for the fastest setup.

Updated 36 days ago

Workday Learning supports SCORM. That is all an Apprendly RolePlay needs.

You have two routes. Upload a SCORM package as packaged content and Workday tracks completion. Or point an External Content lesson at a share link and set it up in a minute.

Workday Learning accepts SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004 (2nd to 4th Edition) and AICC 2.x. Apprendly ships SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004, so either works.

One Workday rule to know up front: packaged content cannot be a standalone lesson. It has to sit in a lesson inside a course. Create the course first.

Steps for SCORM integration

  1. Create your RolePlay: If you haven’t already, create the RolePlay in the Apprendly platform.
  2. Download the SCORM package: Open your Apprendly dashboard, find the RolePlay, click “Share” and select “Download SCORM.” You get a ZIP file.
  3. Upload the ZIP to Workday: Sign in with a learning administrator role. You have three ways in:
    • Upload the ZIP to Drive, then pick it from the Learning file picker.
    • Run the Create Media Import Job task. Use this for bulk uploads.
    • Select the file straight from your desktop when you create the lesson.
  4. Create the course: Run the Create Course task and choose a Digital Course. Give it a title, description and learning topics.
  5. Add the lesson: Inside the course, add a lesson and set the content type to Packaged Content. Point it at the SCORM ZIP you uploaded.
  6. Publish the course so learners can enrol.
  7. Test it: Launch the RolePlay from a learner account. Finish it and check the completion lands in Workday.

Quiz and score reporting

Workday tracks the completion status of a SCORM package automatically. For question-level data, an administrator has to enable packaged content interaction reporting on the Edit Tenant Setup - HCM task. It is off by default.

File size

The Drive and Learning file picker route caps ZIP uploads at 4 GB. Media Import goes to 20 GB. A RolePlay package is nowhere near either, so this only matters if you are batching a large library.

Workday Learning has an External Content lesson type that takes a URL. No SCORM, no upload.

  1. Create your RolePlay: Make sure your RolePlay is created in Apprendly.
  2. Get the share link: In your dashboard, click “Share” on the RolePlay and select “Get share link.”
  3. Add an External Content lesson: In your Workday course, add a lesson and choose External Content. Paste the link into the Content URL field.
  4. Publish and test: Launch it as a learner and confirm the RolePlay opens.

One tradeoff. Workday cannot read a completion signal back from an external URL. The learner marks the lesson complete themselves, and external content is excluded from Workday’s progress calculations. You still see the real activity, score and transcript inside the Apprendly dashboard. If you need completion in Workday reports, use SCORM.

What Workday does not do

  • No iFrame embed. Workday Learning has no HTML widget or rich-text area that renders an iFrame, so the RolePlay always opens in its own window. Every other integration route covers this.
  • No cmi5 or xAPI packaged content. Workday’s packaged content list is SCORM and AICC only. Use SCORM.
  • Flash-era SCORM does not run on mobile. Apprendly packages are HTML5, which Workday supports on desktop and mobile.

Which one should you pick?

Use SCORM if completion belongs in Workday, in a curriculum, or in a compliance report. Use the External Content link if you want it live today and you are happy reporting from Apprendly.
